Every day in our nursery there are sensory activities for the children to take part in. When a child asked to play with the multi-coloured balls I had to think about the sensory and learning possibilities and directions it could take the children’s exploration. After setting up slides, bags and a variety of surface levels the different ways of working were visible all over the studio. Some responded to the sound the balls made when being moved around, others enjoyed experimenting with rolling and gravity. One child filed a bag with balls and then got in with them appearing to feel safe and playing with how they all moved around him. He was very pleased when another child observed what he was doing and wanted to do the same as it affirmed that his actions and playfulness were valid.
