Children can show high levels of engagement and focus whilst working with ‘open ended materials’ that have no prescribed way of being used. The plans, choices and decisions made show the child’s level of understanding and if they are able to notice different shapes, size and colours. Making patterns, rhythms and sequencing displays mathematical¬†abilities. Working with a range of objects also gives the children an awareness of material qualities and properties.
